Red Onion is a Taiwanese restaurant among the many Chinese kitchens in Edison, NJ. We took the opportunity to lunch there while running errands in the area. Turned out to be a great choice. Although not easy to find on the tail end of a nondescript commercial strip, we saw its sign and walked in to a decent sized dining room with a half dozen booths along one wall and about a dozen tables spread across the remainder. Plenty of original watercolors displayed and for sale on the walls. David the proprietor seemed to be handling most of the operation himself. He sat us, took our order, disappeared into the kitchen to participate in its preparation and served our four courses to us in traditional style - separately as ready. The food was excellent. We chose from both the lunch and regular menu, which were integrated seamlessly. Fried Pork Chop, Crispy Fried Intestine, Fish Fillets in Chili Sauce from the mains, and Orange Beef from the lunch list. I started with Hot &Sour Soup, which was flavorful and loaded with tofu, sprouts, pork slivers and potent vinegar. Loved it! The Pork Chop was deboned and pressed thin. The result was a crisp sliced Katsu-like cutlet with nice flavor and long crunchy chew. The Intestine was also crisp and filled with green beans that mixed well with the hardened shell and soft innards. Not my fave, but my lovely partner ate it enthusiastically. The Fish and Chili was very good, with tender lightly breaded white fish fillets and red chili sauce that included small pieces of celery, sprouts and cabbage, in a large bowl. Finally, the lunch sized Orange Beef was delicious with sweet and spicy amber sauce coating the pieces of lightly crisped beef. Ubiquitous broccoli sprigs added color to the dish. Service was friendly and accommodating. David was happy to interact and talk about his business there. Red Onion is a Five Star keeper.

This is such an authentic Taiwanese bistro! The food is high quality and so beautifully crafted! The owner is so welcoming and friendly. The ambiance is artistic and homey. The price is unbelievably reasonable. We had salted crispy chicken, Mongolian beef, garlic chicken and broccoli. Shaved ice of red beans and mango for dessert. So delicious! We will definitely come back again soon.

A very authentic Taiwanese restaurant that I stumbled upon while I was in this local part of Jersey. Their food is reasonably priced, and food quality is impeccable. I ordered the General tso Chicken and it had the right amount of crunchiness and sauce. I would highly recommend anybody to come here to eat. I would eat here again if I pass by this part of Jersey again. Note that you would have a great conversation with the restaurant owner while you're waiting for your food to be made.

We were looking for vegetarian chinese fare and found it here on yelp so we gave this place a try. Eating a super early dinner at 5:30 with kids in tow led to wonderful attentive experience before any potential crowds. Service was fantastic and any questions we had were so politely addressed. The dishes came out fast, portions were generous and the flavors hit the notes we needed. Garlic pea shoots- don't be discouraged by the name. This is seasonal and a wonderful side to the rest of the food General Tso Tofu- very large serving, tofu has a slight crisp if you start eating immediately and a slight sweetness to the sauce. Would love to see a kung pao version with the peppers and peanuts! Veg fried rice- finally a place that does it right! Not just rice with a small pouring of frozen carrots and peas. This was great. Scallion Pancake- surprisingly not the standard version. This puffed up nicely and despite being deep fried was not greasy. Wonderful dipping sauce too! Homestyle Tofu- lots of mixed veg. This was not my favorite due to the "tobasco-esque" tanginess but a hit with my wife. There are some toys near the front to keep your kids (or you) busy while you wait but honestly the food comes out hot, fresh and fast- so you may as well just wait! We will be back!

A great local place! I always have gotten take out, so not sure how there in-restaurant service is. However, considering how friendly the cashier was, I don't doubt it would be any less. The take out is great! Not too oily like other Asian services. I love the broccoli chicken and noodles. All the items were well seasoned and tasted great. For the price for each item, I was able to feed a family of 4 in less than $50! In this day and age, doing take out hardly ever costs this less. I believe I got 5 items! This place deserves a shot especially for a weeknight take out meal!

Great vegetarian dinner! Our family isn't vegetarian but decided to get a few tofu dishes. Veg dumplings had crunchy veggies but I prefer the skin to be thinner. The general tofu was crispy, sweet and savory served with steamed broccoli. We got a tofu with black bean sauce and requested it spicy. This was my favorite. The tofu and broccoli was simple but great flavor. We requested 2 of the dishes made with soft tofu and they accommodated. The place is casual with lots of art on the walls.

The only Taiwanese spot in central NJ and the best Taiwanese spot. I love their oyster omelet, and their braised pork belly over rice
